Abstract / Summary

Rupert Loydell’s forthcoming book of poetry, Dear Mary, is concerned with ekphrasis, colour, painting, Italy and the annunciation. It not only specifically references individual paintings such as the Cortona and San Giovanni Valdarano annunciation paintings by Fra Angelico, but also imagines how the annunciation might appear if painted by other artists such as Francis Bacon, or re-imagined as an alien abduction or romantic encounter. I propose to read some of these poems from the book, as well as others which reference ideas of colour and perception (particularly David Batchelor’s writings), show images of some of the paintings and places which have inspired me, and share the research and development of the project.
