Abstract / Summary

Abstract
The podcast form is still reeling from Sarah Koening’s and Lauren Spohrer’s success with Serial (2014). Listeners have continued to increase year after year (Peiser 2019) highlighting podcasts – and the multimodal potential of digital audio storytelling – as an attractive form for writers enabling them to extend their connection to readers beyond the book and into the sound waves (Eddo-Lodge, 2018; Mahnke, 2014). Vincent van Gogh writes to Anton van Rappard, “I keep on making what I can’t do yet in order to learn to be able to do it” (1885). In this spirit, I aim to remediate my writing and research practice into becoming a podcaster through making the of the pilot season of On The Hill (2019a). As a creative manoeuvre (Stranger et al. 2014), this narrative podcast researchers, reassembles, retells, and reacts to Cornish cemeteries and the stories of those buried in them with new original writing, creative non-fiction, and discussions of practice. This project orchestrates a spiralling remediation that echoes back to oral storytelling and aims to enhance the narrative podcast form, challenge and elevate my practice, open critical and creative space to enable me to reclaim my voice, and recontextualize Cornwall one cemetery at the time.
