A twice monthly film podcast intersecting practice, scholarship, criticism and fandom.

CONTEXTUAL STATEMENT -

The Cinematologists podcast was created in 2015 by me and Dr Dario Llinares to ‘explore and utilize the characteristics of an audio medium to capture the sensibility of the cinema-going experience'. The aim was to do this through podcasting’s ‘idiosyncratic yet fluid set of technological, economic, creative, social and disciplinary conditions.’ (Llinares, 2018: 124)

Since its launch the podcast has become a space for film scholars, critics, practitioners and fans to showcase and discuss their work and experiences and a space for the discussion of film history, industry, culture and the future of the medium. The form of The Cinematologists presents myriad voices and sounds in different contexts from live recordings, pre-recorded interviews and contextual clips from existing material, often in the same episode, resulting in a layered and discursive audio object.

This commitment to exploring the potential of a film podcast to be an audio form creatively and formally suited to the exploration of an audio/visual medium has resulted in a journal article in the form of a podcast that explores this potentiality. Through the podcast I have also developed a commitment to the nascent field of Podcast Studies, within which I am a significant voice following the release of the interdisciplinary edited collection Podcasting: New Aural Cultures and Digital Media (Palgrave, 2018, cited above).

The Cinematologists is the official partner podcast of the BFI National Film Seasons, one of a number of continued commercial partnerships and has seen its listenership rise to an average of 15,000+ per episode. This activity has also resulted in a new avenue of enquiry for me. I am interested in the potential ability of podcasting to address historical narrowness in media canon formation, increase representation and diversity of non-mainstream voices and to act as a space for the curation and activation of archives for new listenership.
