Abstract / Summary

Abstract
The concerns of this chapter reside at the junction of pictorial space, narrative, illustration and architecture.
The work of the painter and architect Giotto (1266-1337) and the broader context of the development of European pictorial space is used to consider the work of; Georges Remi, Oliver Jeffers and Chris Ware. Their use of pictorial space to inform narrative is of interest and, in the case of Ware, his particular concern with architecture as a narrative device establishes the usefulness of art history to the practice of illustration. More specifically, Giotto’s work is considered as a means to furthering understanding and production of contemporary illustration. Giotto’s visual strategies which interweave real and imagined architectural space to communicate narrative and draw its audience into a fictive space are used as the basis for a proposal, which considers the development of the illustrated book into an architectural form. London’s underground transport network has an interesting history and ongoing relationship with visual art and for this reason it is used here as a speculative model to consider not only the potential synthesis of illustrated book and architecture, but also as a stage for the illustrator to engage with the translation into visual form of the social dynamics of urban space.
