Abstract / Summary

In this accessible article, Dey discusses the wide ranging, genre crossing nature of solo performance, which includes 18th century performance lecture, one act dramas, circus and cabaret acts, performance art, spoken word poetry, physical theatre and rap. The work being performed as part of Chichester Festival Theatre's summer programme is the solo monopolylogue 'Random', about the knifing of a young black man in London in 2009. It is directed by Tinuke Craig and performed by Petra Letang, who is Mother, Sister, Father, Brother, and also herself, in the present - a black woman (like many others) whose role it is to speak out and bear witness when black boys and black men die.
