Abstract / Summary

As built environments for death, mourning and for holding space for the departed, cemeteries have long been linked to storytelling which tenderly walks the line between historical and fiction. Creative responses to cemeteries demonstrate the engaging, moving spectrum that immersive storytelling of the departed can achieve (Perthi Kov, 2017; Richards, 2004; Saunders, 2018; Wild Works, 2018).
On The Hill is a research project and literary podcast founded, produced, written and edited by me. This project investigates Cornish cemeteries and the people buried there and reassembles, retells and reimagines these stories through original creative writing. The podcast form is at the core of this research as a creative manoeuvre of remediation of writing and research practice echoing back to oral storytelling (Llinares 2018; Berry 2016; Bolter & Grusin 1999; Stranger et al. 2014; Barnard 2017). Available via open-access, free digital media and broadcasted in Soundart Radio, this podcast aims to enhance the form through combining historical research, immersive audio, creative non-fiction, new writing and discussions of practice. These methods combine old and new stories to illuminate aspects of our realities by examining the legacies of the past. Understanding death as another stage of storytelling with its own unique complications, On The Hill looks at each life, reveals a moment in history and ties back to the construction of the cemetery.
New writing is commissioned for each episode in response to one grave. Season One, the pilot and this output, focuses on Falmouth Cemetery and it provokes questions and identifies learnings we can carry forward. On The Hill analyses who do these stories belong to, how does our collective memory engages with lives long lost and why we build cemeteries. This ongoing research continues to deliver new insights into the subjects of death, place, personal experience and writing practice by integrating historical research, creative writing, transmedia storytelling and discussion of practice.
