Abstract / Summary

Gothic Kernow demonstrates how, as both an imagined, symbolic, and real space, Cornwall becomes the subject of Gothic concerns, particularly in terms of otherness, animism, and the sublime. Cornwall can be put on the Gothic map alongside Haiti, or H.P. Lovecraft and Stephen King country as real spaces that have a substantial and pervasive Gothic mythos attached to them. Most importantly, this book argues and demonstrates that Cornwall has been overlooked as a generative force in the shaping of the modern and contemporary Gothic and that Gothic Kernow needs to be considered as a powerful influence in the development of a Gothic grammar.
