...Reusement

Fletcher, Jerome (2007) ...Reusement. [Artwork]

Item Type: Artwork
Creators: Fletcher, Jerome
Abstract / Summary:

This is a digital text and image work based on a Java applet originally developed with programmer, Toby Holland that can be loaded with different image files and used in various modes and contexts. ‘…Reusement’ is the latest in a series exploring the potential of the applet as a writing/performance/visual art tool. A digital re-presentation of textual fragments from Michel Leiris’s ‘Biffures’ (trans. ‘Scratches’), it is an investigation into bilingualism, the fragment, how the fragment can blur the distinction between the textual and the visual, writing as erasure, and the tension between public/private reading.

Additional Information: Fletcher’s first deployment of the applet was entitled ‘Pentimento’ and consisted of texts by Fletcher and digitised images by painter, Geoffrey Olsen. This was shown at Writing Space, George Mason University, Washington DC, and the Exeter tEXt festival in 2004. Fletcher presented another work deploying the applet, ‘The Lorentzweiler Archive’ at the ‘Revisualising Writing: Canvas, Page, Screen’ conference (Centre for Contemporary Writing, University of Southampton, September 2005) and the 2006 international DRHA (Digital Resources for the Humanities and Arts) conference, hosted by Dartington College of Arts. Screen shots from ‘The Lorentzweiler Archive’ had already appeared as artist pages in Performance Research vol. 7 no. 4, Dec 2002. ‘…Reusement’ was first presented at E-poetry 2005 hosted by Birkbeck College, London’s Contemporary Poetics Research Centre (CPRC) and The Electronic Poetry Center (EPC), State University of New York, Buffalo. It was subsequently shown at E-poetry 2007, hosted Université Paris VIII, and organised by The Electronic Poetry Center (SUNY), Le Laboratoire Paragraphe (Université de Paris VIII) and Mots-Voir. Fletcher’s work, in 2007, was accompanied by his presentation outlining some of the issues that this technology raises for writing.
