Abstract / Summary

The essay is a ‘deep reading’ of Wolff’s glass sculpture, invoking Bachelard’s ‘Poetics of Space’ and (inter alia) the choreographer Pina Bausch (whom Wolff observed and drew), that explores the artist’s technical and phenomenological approaches to embodiment, and the interplay of surface/skin and body/depth across the internal and external dimensions of a translucent medium. The body as vessel, as house, and as sentient surface is articulated in terms of glass casting and surface finishing processes.

Exhibition toured from the Glasmuseet Ebeltoft (Denmark) to: the National Glass Centre, Sunderland (UK); Glashutte Gernheim (Germany); Finnish Glasmuseum Riihimáki (Finland); Holmegaard Glassworks (Denmark); The Mint Museum, North Carolina (USA); and Stadtmuseum Schleswig (Germany). Reviewed in Neues Glas, American Craft, and Craft Arts International. This essay, together with that on Antoine Leperlier ("Antoine Leperlier: tralucentes novi liquores fluxisse"), applies thinking originated by Brewerton in an earlier essay, ‘Touching the Void’ (FORM No. 1, December 2004, pp. 2-7) regarding concepts of positive and negative space (being and nothingness) with reference to Heidegger, Daoism, and lost-wax casting in glass. ‘Touching the Void’ was also published under the author’s Chinese name, Bu Huadun, as ‘Chu Mo Xu Kong’ in ‘Zhuang Shi’ (trnsl.Art & Design, no. 145, Beijing, May 2005, pp. 60-2. ISSN 0412-3662)*, and delivered as a lecture, ‘Something and Nothing: Western Modernism and Negative Space’, at the China Academy of Art (Hangzhou) in May 2006. The lecture extended the thesis to the work of Rachel Whiteread and James Turrell.
