Abstract / Summary

“But what if the director tells them they have to do it?”

This paper analyses some of the specific challenges still being encountered with established, normative attitudes during the adaptation to a post #metoo world. Taking notions of consent derived from the work of intimacy co-ordination/direction and following the work of Fairfield (2019), Villarreal (2022a) and Dunn (2019), it will take the notions of the “willful actor” (Barclay 2019) “agentic framing” (Villerreal 2022b) and “acceptable risk” (Rikard and Villerreal 2023) into a discussion of breaking patriarchal and hierarchical structures in creative and pedagogical processes.

Using the framework of “structures of feeling”, (Williams 1977) and “Cultural transmission theory” (Pitches 2017), the paper will examine the changing culture of the stage and screen industry as it incorporates the intimacy guidelines developed (particularly) by O’Brien, Dor and Warden as it directly relates to pedagogy on BA Acting degrees in both conservatoire and university environments. Drawing on my experience as Head of Acting at Guildford School of Acting (GSA) within the University of Surrey for 8 years and on my current pedagogical thinking as Head of Theatre Arts at Falmouth University, I want to use the growing work around intimacy in performance for stage and screen to tease out ways of challenging normative hierarchical attitudes to the role of the director and the pedagogue in contemporary actor training, pointing towards more student centred approaches to pedagogy that focus on the agency of the student (Barnard-Jones and Rawlins 2020).
