Biosphere

Kruse, Klaus (2009) Biosphere. [Performance]

Item Type: Performance
Event Summary: One and Other (Antony Gormley)/Trafalgar Square, London
Creators: Kruse, Klaus
Abstract / Summary:

This life is not lived from the hand into the mouth, but from the ass into the maw.

On a vast hessian landscape we observe 5 individuals trapped in their own sustainable and lonely biospheres. Their daily habits are repetitive, functional and filthy until their all consuming isolation gradually plunges them through an immersive change of reality.

Hauling the audience along with them they dive into an escalating environment. Experienced through original song, puppetry, taste, physical theatre, ballet, installation, mask, hologram, aerial work and story-telling Biosphere draws on the multiple talents of the collaborating interdisciplinary group of artists.

Gutteral a capella harmonies start grinding as the floor stretches and buckles in the red light; a vast hessian wave gathers from the ground, gaining height and momentum rolling towards the retreating audience. Satyr-like creatures dart amongst them, balletically fleeing in their direction. The wave builds and builds until freezing at its apex, spent in an eerie crescendo, forming a series of labyrinthine caves beneath.

The audience follow Father-Compost and his mystical beasts on a magical journey into this amazing maze, physically entering into the herd’s collective subconscious. Under here they become a part of the pack leading a ritual that initiates life-giving transformation and rejuvenation but demands a mutilating sacrifice…
