Abstract / Summary
Clay Phoenix is a 600 page biography of the deaf and blind twentieth century poet and 'sex mystic' Jack Clemo. The biography is based on my AHRC-funded, archive-based PhD, and was published in time for the Clemo centenary in 2016. Reading through Clemo's extensive archive of letters, personal diaries, drafts and other manuscripts, the substantive collection of which is held at the University of Exeter's Special Collections Library, this study of Clemo's life and work sheds considerable light on a famously difficult poet, rooting the study in materials and findings never before considered or even viewed.
