Abstract / Summary

The article was initially invited as a contribution to the Precise Woodstock of Thinking (September 2008) - a ten-day event at Tanz Quartier Wien (TQW) www.tqw.at with fifty key speakers drawn from international artists and theorists who had contributed to the TQW programme since 2000. The event marked the eight-year history of TQW during Siegrid Gareis’ tenure as Director and its contribution to radical and future thinking in contemporary European dance and performance. TQW, as a major European production and research centre for dance, was a pivotal to the development and visibility of ‘non-aligned’ performance in dance and choreography in this period. The paper marks the beginning of a series of research outputs on the nature of attention and its relation to ideas of futurity, and the space of appearance in relation to performance and the choreographic image. Starting from the proposition that ‘the future is only ever a shift of attention in the present’, the research in all four outputs connects the poetics of ‘open work, the movement of embodied thought, and an exploration choreographic image with the work of significant european performance and theatre artists and choreographers through active independent and research networks including Artea, Frakcija, BIT, and TQW. The article was published in English and German (trans. Lilian-Astrid Geese).
