PIONEERING COLLABORATION REIMAGINES THE FUTURE OF MUSEUM VISITOR EXPERIENCES

The Almeida Theatre today announces a new pioneering collaboration with six other leading British organisations from the fields of culture, entertainment and education, which plans to create immersive theatre experiences in museums, using cutting-edge mixed reality technology to bring dinosaurs and robots to life.

The project will combine immersive theatre with the latest mixed reality technology to create two separate adventure game experiences in the iconic rooms of the Natural History Museum and Science Museum. Visitors will play detectives, meeting and interacting with dinosaurs and robots, exploring multi-sensory, interactive worlds and getting the chance to shape their own stories.

The collaboration, led by creative content studio Factory 42 and including the Almeida Theatre, Magic Leap, Natural History Museum, Science Museum Group, Sky and the University of Exeter, is being funded by a £4 million grant from UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), as part of the wider Audiences of the Future initiative to maintain the leading position of the UK’s cultural sector as the most ground-breaking in the world.

It is expected that the visitor experiences will open to the public in the middle of 2020. Further details of the project will be announced in the coming months.
