Abstract / Summary: | Navigators II: Home uses an original method of combining photographic imagery with virtual imaging processes. This involves working with up to 15 layers to build up a final image of a place that no longer exists – in this case the Methodist missionary buildings that were hidden under fifteen feet of lava from Mount Matavanu on Samoa. The resulting composite images extend the possibilities of what can be depicted through photographic-based imaging and raise questions about the evidential nature of the medium, particularly when applied to historical or archival subjects. This project was the outcome of a Winston Churchill Memorial Trust award and was also supported by the AHRB and South Eastern Arts. |
