Abstract / Summary
This essay is quite ambitious for this kind of venue, attempting as it does to question the way most of us actually get meaning from photographs most of the time. Using an historical structure borrowed from Vilem Flusser, it describes a common conventional misunderstanding of the way photographs convey meaning, and then “unravels” it, setting these four bodies of photographic work in opposition to such conventions.
The exhibition itself (6 May to 10 June 2006) drew unusual numbers of visitors to an arts centre quite distant from population centres where residents and visitors would be expecting to see challenging new photography.
