Abstract / Summary:

'27 Points of View' was the result of a collaborative project involving five choreographers, a director and a composer. All of the choreographers are established artists in their own right, well known in the context of Berlin dance performance. They were selected as participants in the project for their different approaches to choreographic process, ranging from the conceptual, to the kinaesthetic and improvisational. The project’s focus was to bring these artists together to explore a common theme with distinctly different conceptions of, and strategies for, choreographic practice. The starting point comprised the structure of Schnitzler’s 'Der Reigen', an Austrian play concerning class, sex and power that caused a scandal at the time of writing. The choreographic processes we employed were intended to question habitual methods of, and fixed responses to, working through dialogues between artists with diverse working methodologies. The conventional roles of performers and makers were tested as the choreographers explored ways to perform each other’s work. Ultimately, the core research focus of this practice-as-research project related to strategies of communication between dance ‘auteurs’ conveying and sharing their specific perspectives on collaborative choreographic devising. The project’s compositional modus operandi – collaboration with and across differences to produce new dance performance forms and languages - has influenced the subsequent work of the choreographers involved; Schubot and Reulecke, for example, have incorporated this working concept into later projects.
