Abstract / Summary

The Tourism Management Institute (TMI) destination management framework is offered as a simple overview and interface for destination managers to help them navigate the key topics surrounding destination management in the years ahead.

The framework is designed to encompass conversations around responsible, sustainable, and regenerative destination management. Whilst not inferred through labels, the content offers an analysis and synthesis of key developments in destination management since the early 1990s whilst encompassing the 2025 VisitEngland Regenerative Destination Management guidelines and internationally recognised standards for embedding sustainability into the management of destinations (GSTC).

This piece of work underpins the TMI Zoom session from July 2026, and establishes a new, original, and significant 'Framework for Understanding Effective Destination Management' to primarily UK-based destination managers.
