Abstract / Summary

This paper provides an overview of a recent drawing research project completed during my PhD, which culminated in a bookwork titled ANCHOR (2015). The premise of the project was to invite a range of artists, writers and curators with a strong interest in drawing to respond to the phenomenon of ‘outline’, by asking them to think through it as a concept in relation to their own concerns. As an artist-researcher with a phenomenological interest in how drawing is understood, I launched this project because I was intrigued with how outline is currently (ill) conceived as a term within drawing. My interest lies not with 'defining' the outline in purely written terms. Instead, I look to ask practitioner's a simple question - what is an outline? - in order to 'outline' an answer via the work they produce. The text is accompanied by slides of the work I received in response.
