Abstract / Summary
A practice based research project exploring issues of access to beaches for people with physical disabilities and mobility difficulties. The research was used to support the development of a beach wheelchair, or 'Sand Chair', to help a wider proportion of the population to access the beach more easily. Simon is worked in partnership with Cornwall Mobility, Truro, to develop such products for the commercial market. Cornwall Mobility can support important primary research activities in this product realm due to its advisory role to a large client base.

Additional Information: | Project Aims & Objectives: Aim: • To complete a pilot project as a joint product development exercise between SD AIR and the Cornwall Mobility Centre (CMC). • To develop a production-ready design for a beach wheelchair with improved design and lower retail cost compared to existing products available. • To develop practice based research outputs which demonstrate originality, significance, rigour and impact, that can contribute to the REF. Objectives: • Benchmark performance of existing products available to CMC. • Identify key areas for design improvement through product analysis and user-centred research and feedback. • Establish Product Design Specification (PDS) as working document. • Develop design concepts, responding to specific research findings, through sketching, model making and CAD. • Manufacture, test and evaluate prototypes responding to refined concept development. • Identify appropriate manufacturers for production. • Produce pre-production prototype(s). • Generate a complete set of manufacturing drawings and CAD data (the IP). • To identify opportunities and risks to the collaborative product development arrangements between AIR and CMC within the case study. • To identify and exploit opportunities for practice based research outcomes through product development. |
