Abstract / Summary
I was awarded a £10,000 Research Grant from the Arts Council to support me expanding my ceramic practice through exploring new ways of firing and kiln building. The Research consisted of four stages;
Stage 1: Carrying out preliminary research about alternative firing methods,
using the following resources:
1. Alternative Kilns and Firing Techniques by J. Watkins & P. Wandless
2. Mastering Kilns and Firing by L. Oesterritter
Stage 2: Travelling to Guldagergaard, Denmark, a world-leading centre of ceramic research, with state of the art facilities and the largest range of kilns at one site in Europe. I worked alongside technicians to explore new firing processes and how to make kilns, consolidating Stage 1’s research. I was based in Denmark for two months (May and June 2022)
Stage 3: I presented my research and development to the staff of Guldagergaard and members of the public.
Stage 4: On returning to the UK I ran two workshops at my studio in London. These workshops facilitated knowledge sharing, as attendees built kilns and fired works together, building networks for future collaborations and research sharing.
