'From Where I'm Standing'

A commission from The Empathy Museum and NHS England.

In the summer of 2020, during the global outbreak of coronavirus, there was a short hiatus between the UK lockdown and the rise of cases in the autumn. At that time, I was commissioned to make portraits of ten NHS nurses across England, by The Empathy Museum and NHS England, as part of a group project called 'From Where I'm Standing'.

The project comprises audio interviews and photographic portraits of thirty-four extraordinary people, ranging from a midwife and a supermarket worker to an undertaker and an anaesthetist. Each person spoke about their experience during the lockdown, and chose an item of particular meaning for them, which was also photographed. The collective result is a series of dipytchs accompanied by voices.
