Abstract / Summary
An analysis of Goblet's graphic novel 'Pretending is Lying' in which I explore the theme of haunting in relation to traumatic experiences and memories and the ways in which they impact upon body and mind. This is also an exploration of the graphic novel as a form very well suited to trauma narratives as the chronology can be disrupted to invoke a sense of the disruptions in memory caused by traumatic events. Visual techniques employed by Goblet to suggest a character haunted by a past relationship are also discussed , such her sophisticated and exopressive use of negative space.
