Abstract / Summary

This paper argues that Oswald's poem 'Dart' engages in gender politics to the extent that the river becomes both muse and agent of its own writing. The position and status of the lyric 'I' is particularly significant in this respect, and the poem, this paper believes, subverts Romantic discourses of nature where the Romantic gaze both owns and colonises nature to its own ends.
