Abstract / Summary
This paper, given at the Schumacher College’s Landscape, Language and the Sublime forum in June 2016, is the first part of a longer piece of writing about the American painter and writer Meinrad Craighead. This section of that longer text evaluates Craighead's mode of approach to art the spiritual (chiefly) through the theoretical lens of James Hillman's 'archetypal psychology'. The full text goes on to discuss the connections between Craighead’s art and her lifelong devotion to the Black Madonna, and to posit imaginal prayer as a gesture of ‘moving out’ (vs. looking inward), that situates our personal lives within a daemonic, supra-personal ecology of mind.
