The Boat Project is a living archive of people's stories and lives, a 30ft vessel made from donated wooden items. To mark the 2012 Cultural Olympiad Lone Twin requested wood to be given to the project, any donation would be gratefully received as long as it had a story behind it. Donations arrived in their thousands, from the highly personal to pieces of national importance. The boat, a state-of-the-art racing yacht built by Olympic yachtsman Mark Covell, was named Collective Spirit by public vote and launched in May 2012. A maiden voyage followed as part of the London 2012 Festival with the boat generating headlines across the world. Collective Spirit has since featured in Dunkirk’s Regional Capital of Culture programme and the reopening of London’s Olympic Park.

A book, edited by David Williams and designed by Kevin Mount, documents each story and donated item, alongside opening out the design and build process of the boat: Williams, David (2012) The Lone Twin Boat Project, Devon: Chiquita Books

The Boat Project project created 22 paid positions, 80 volunteer positions and an on-going commercial venture. Over thirty other public artworks were commissioned in response to The Boat Project during the 2012 Cultural Olympiad.

The Boat Project by Lone Twin was commissioned through Artists Taking the Lead, a series of 12 public art commissions across the UK to celebrate the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad. The Boat Project was the winning commission for the South East region and is funded by Arts Council England.
