Abstract / Summary
In 2011 the University of Glasgow and The Hunterian initiated the Hunterian Associates Programme, which aimed to connect the museum’s extensive collection with the cutting-edge research undertaken by postgraduates at the university. Three writers and researchers established a Writing @ The Hunterian, a residency and a research project to discover how the museum could be a source of inspiration for the community of Glasgow and the university. This project included a series of object-based workshops, a writing station at the museum, a talk in the AyeWrite! 2013 Festival in the Mitchell Library, two conference presentations ('Writing into Art' conference 2013 at Stratchclyde University, 'Object' 2013 at Oxford University) the production and editing of an anthology of pieces inspired by The Hunterian collections, and an original short story included in that anthology, 'Unseen'. The anthology was launched at The Hunterian in February 2014 to celebrate its publication. A series of readings from writers published in the anthology took place. Both The Hunterian, through its Hunterian Associates programme and the University of Glasgow's Graduate School supported this programme. The Graduate School provided the funding for the publishing of the anthology. The project was the beginning of a relationship between the Department of Creative Writing at the University of Glasgow and The Hunterian which now continues through new project to this day generating creative work which continues to be inspired by the museum's collections.
