Journeys To, From and Around: Founding Home in Transition

Myers, Misha (2005) Journeys To, From and Around: Founding Home in Transition. In: Art in the Age of Terrorism. Paul Holberton publishing, London, pp. 213-227. ISBN 1903470412

Abstract / Summary

How might multiple attachments or belongings to place coexist or be fostered in these times (of terrorism)? What forms of belonging might be encouraged as alternatives to those asserted by nationalism, those based on shared genealogy, language, culture, customs and heritage, or to those that lead to nationalism’s founding? What forms of belonging exist without producing further displacement? Further, in the context of these questions, can the methods deployed in ‘way from home’ be conceived as hospitable methods of developing attachments and social bonds with a place? The chapter explores these questions by considering narratives generated through the ‘way from home’ walks - autobiographical material specific to a time and place and dependent upon individual circumstances and sensitivities. It builds on previous work exploring personal and cultural identifications/narratives of place, migration and cultural displacement, methods of cultural and visual anthropology, geography and embodied practices of ‘wayfinding’.

Additional Information: This chapter emerged from the exhibition ‘Art in the Age of Terrorism’ (Millais Gallery, Southampton Solent University, 12 November 2004 - 29 January 2005), which included work by many of the international artists also represented in the book. Both exhibition and book explored ways in which art can articulate the unspeakable of terrorism through visual languages. The exhibition included an installation of the digital work ‘way from home’, and a presentation by Myers. This publication led to subsequent conference invitations, e.g.: paper/presentation at ‘Creative Community Development’, DCC Granollers, Spain (March 2006); convener/presenter on panel ‘Walk the Line: Ethics of Participation in Contemporary Performance’, part of ‘Performing Rights’, PSi, QMU, London (June 2006); and contributor to panel ‘Teaching the Art of Engagement’, at International Conference on Arts in Society, University of Edinburgh (August 2006).
