Abstract / Summary

Hydropathic is a photographic project that examines the complex history of Craiglockhart. First built as a hydropathic centre for water therapies, the building was requisitioned at the start of the First World War, and turned into a military hospital for the treatment of sick officers including the poets Wilfred Owen and Siegfried Sassoon. The research drew on the War Poets collection housed at Craiglockhart Library. The project developed methods of photography and lighting to create an atmospheric interpretation of the history of healing and regeneration that are embedded in the place. The work, which was supported by the Scottish Arts Council and Napier University, is now permanently installed at the new Craiglockhart Building, Napier University.
