Abstract / Summary
The co-produced, research project explored the role and value of digital storytelling to the Cornish seaside town of Newquay. Through the collaboration of three key partners (i.e., Falmouth University, Blystra Arts and GeoTourist), this ‘experiment’ enabled a data-driven evaluation of digital storytelling to take place, and represent the first step towards potentially securing additional funding in the future. The goal was to collaboration will Blystra Arts CIC and GeoTourist and engage with Newquay Town Council (to obtain permission to share the existing story of place), Visit Newquay (to continue to promote the Discovery Trail but on the new platform), and Newquay BID (to promote the story to local businesses / residents).
Working collectively, the project produced 14 audio files and a live online audio tour, which offers users an immersive experience of the Newquay Discovery Trail. Furthermore, the intention of this research was to generate data. The data (collected until August 2024) will enable the value of digital storytelling to a destination to be quantified and steer future decision making about broader projects – projects that aim to re-connect people with planet via the arts, culture, and heritage of place. The place being in this situation, Newquay Cornwall – a town that has succumbed to the challenges faced by seaside resorts (i.e., social deprivation, decay, and decline) which were exacerbated through the pandemic and cost-of-living crisis.
