Abstract / Summary
Einaudi wanted to commission an ‘Encyclopaedia of music for the 21st century’ and selected J.J. Nattiez as the co-ordinating editor. He designed a series of volumes, each dealing with an issue or view of contemporary music in a European context. In the volume considering ‘The Unity of Music’, I was invited to write an article looking at the world music phenomenon in the context of music education in the West. This was as a result of my longstanding interest in the interaction of world musics and education, pursued principally through my research work in Ghana, but also through my UK involvement in education at both school and tertiary levels.
