Abstract / Summary

Abstract
The workshop DREAM – PLAY – CHALLENGE: The Future of Sustainability in Architecture took place in June 2025. As a continuation of Sarah Riviere’s Dream – Play – Challenge Project (DPC) (initiated 2021), the aim of the workshop was to further develop and refine the DPC methodology that enables overdue change in the working practices and thus constructed outputs of built environment professionals in the face of the climate emergency. This report specifically shows how the 2025 workshop carefully developed and tested the original Dream – Play – Challenge methodology in a new context and with newly choreographed events and outputs, a methodology that had found its first iterations in the conference (2021), publication (2023) and first workshop (2024) of the same name.

This document reports on the rigorous preparation for the 2025 workshop, and underlines how such careful preparation of an event or a design process is a key part of the Dream – Play – Challenge approach. This report shows how the 2025 workshop developed the approach of the 2024 workshop with paired workshop events, and choreographed outputs, while maintaining the reach to a larger group of participants including architects, academics and interested lay persons. The report documents the supporters, sponsors, co-organisers, protagonists, and respondents who joined in creating the workshop, and the link to the Women in Architecture festival.

Significant outputs of the 2025 DPC workshop are documented in this report, alongside the success of the workshop itself. These include a set of co-created policy proposals, a Dream-Play-Challenge Website, and a set of publicity fliers, Facebook and Instagram posts. Together, these create an ongoing presence for Dream – Play – Challenge as a movement to enable a shift in the processes and thus outputs of our contemporary built environment planning. The report also shows how the first people to include DPC in their own practice describe the impact of this in transforming their work.
