Abstract / Summary
Disney’s purchase of Lucasfilm heralded a new direction for Star Wars towards Disney's new character-led diversification strategy. It also had some unexpected fallout for the world of videogames both within and beyond the franchise. The absorption of Star Wars into the Disney machine entailed a new approach towards transmedial content creation for the series. This involved the integration of its characters into the macro-transmedial world of the broader Disney meta-franchise.
This chapter compares classic Star Wars games with the three new releases developed since the buyout. Changes in the overall transmedia strategy of the franchise will be investigated, and the transmedial deployment of games scrutinised. The distinct markets targeted by the three games will be investigated and conclusions drawn regarding the ways the franchise has evolved since the acquisition, and its new place within the now heavily character-focused Disney meta-franchise established under Bob Iger. Is this wholesale approach to transmediality helping the franchise, or is it simply homogenising it?
