Abstract / Summary

1,000 word illustrated article on the Japanese fashion company 45 rpm. Published by Selvedge magazine, London. Issue 65 - pages 22-25. July/August 2015 - the 'Pop' issue. Japanese clothing brand 45rpm gives emphasis to easy-going, comfortable garments and was established in 1978. Not fast at 78 rpm - the speed of a single and not slow at 331⁄3 rpm - the speed of an album but middle-paced – the speed of an extended play, 45 rpm offers clothing that is just right and in harmony with the seasons. The musical analogy conjures up a connection with a pre-digital past, where an alternative is offered to everything happening at superfast speed. A typically Japanese aesthetic falls into two distinct ‘camps’, where the polarities define each other. BASARA translates as ‘to dress with stylish extravagance’ – mis-matched patterns, layered textures and clashing colours. As a counter-point, 45rpm favour WABI-SABI where inspiration is usually drawn from nature - its processes and natural phenomena. Simple and direct, the womenswear and menswear conjures up a creative reflecting on their practice or a solitary traveller – it is imaginative but also intended for everyday life. 45rpm clothes will exist happily alongside other items in the wardrobe. They do not shout to be heard but have an understanding of what they are – a real integrity.
