| Abstract / Summary: | 'Deformed Surfaces' brings together my lifelong connection with the Somerset landscape and two decades' worth of photographic practice. Projects within the exhibition connect with various themes relating to the representation of place. Collectively the exhibition asserts that it is a dynamic landscape, rich in history and pre-history and geologically unique. The work encourages viewers of landscape pictures to be less concerned with the surface appearance of the land and its pictorial potential, and instead reflect upon the historical and ecological narratives surrounding a landscape and their relevance to them. The most recent work in the exhibition asks questions around the sustainable development of the Somerset Levels; how we can balance the needs of water management, biodiversity and the archaeological uniqueness of this landscape. |
