Moimi Oczami / Through My Eyes

"Moimi Oczami / Through My Eyes" is a contemplative immersive audio experience cocreated with 12 first generation Polish migrant mothers living in Plymouth. Weaving personal testimonies with poetry and soundscapes, the work explores themes of belonging, language, memory, loss, motherhood and home. Shared at Devil’s Point, Plymouth, the piece is experienced collectively with other audience members via silent disco headphones while overlooking the sea.

"Moimi Oczami" forms a part of a series "Through My Eyes", site-specific immersive audio performative events, co created with marginalised communities exploring themes of home, belonging and place. The work informs ongoing research on intersection between participatory performance, digital technology (sound) and empathy, while analysing artistic strategies used within. The outcomes provide new insights into digital audio methodologies for a creation of community-led participatory and site specific performative sound work.

This investigation draws on Pauline Oliveros’ concept of Deep Listening alongside established histories of acoustic ecology, performance led sound walks and audio installations.
The process, from initial community engagement to hosting a series of workshops with local partners such as The Box and University of Plymouth, involved collection of stories, memories, creative writing, guided audio recording, editing, consultations and public facing immersive audio live events.

"Moimi Oczami / Through My Eyes" in Plymouth was commissioned and produced by Plymouth Culture for Sea for Yourself, funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund, Arts Council England Place Partnership Fund and Plymouth City Council.
