Abstract / Summary

The practice of graphic design is concerned with the hierarchical placement of information to deliver meaning and context. UnDead Type is a project, to create typographic design. The brief places at the top of the hierarchical ‘process list’, before consideration to aesthetics, form, function or legibility, the designers emotional response to ideas concerning (im)mortality. These personal values and beliefs then generate the rationale and system for the design thinking.
Using individual monumental characters (typographic anthropology), as a starting point, we will be creating four open source, typefaces in response to Stephen Caves1 : Four Immortality Narratives . Elixir ; staying alive, life extension stories. Resurrection; life, death and rebirth, science, faith and fiction. The Soul; the nonmaterial part of the body that is ‘the real me’, and Legacy ; cultural, genetic and meme.
Moth is a research project, which through the discipline of Graphic Design, helps with the unhiding of death. It aims to facilitate problem solving by making ‘tools’* to encourage dialogue about mortality helping us to find perspective and turning death from something we fear into something we might learn from.
*These Tools are transferable ‘kits’ for both regional and international partnerships to run workshops, seminars and projects. Responding appropriately to the sensitivities of each specific ‘cultural group’ and their collective perspectives on death issues. UnDead Type is a collaborative project with students and staff from Falmouth University and Augsburg University of Applied Sciences.
