Abstract / Summary

This paper is a practical exploration of discontinuity at work in thought. The piece takes a series of ideas found in Eugene Thacker’s writing and asks how they might be developed through art discourses. For Thacker, our ongoing failure to address the imminent climate catastrophe is a result of our inability to imagine the world without us, a world after the demise of humanity. The idea of the world without us can be achieved, in his view, but only with the aid of thoughts that are, themselves, not human. Inhuman thought will manifest differently in different disciplinary traditions. In the discourses of art and literature, there can even be found a tradition of thinking with inhuman thoughts. It is a practice to be learned and developed. One way of doing so, this paper proposes, is to notice and pay attention to what are here described as the architectonic faculties of the imagination.
