Abstract / Summary

Methodology is a fundamental aspect of research, yet there is not much discussion of original methodologies developed explicitly for game studies, although there are many suggestions of how existing methods such as textual analysis or ethnography might be applied to games and gaming contexts. This workshop aims to discuss some of the key methodological questions that stem from recent research on novel game analysis methodologies. One aspect this workshop will discuss in
detail is the nature of mixing methods from various disciplines, or how inspirations from game-adjacent and non-game domains (such as religious study, computer science, or user experience research) might help reframe or rethink the analysis of games. In particular, the workshop will be discussing the relatively new game analysis methodology termed ‘tandem analysis’. To help unpick research on the method so far, and to discuss broader methodological questions for the analysis of games, the workshop will discuss the findings of trialling this brand-new method for game analysis and broader questions relating to new and unique methodologies for game studies.
