Abstract / Summary

In this interview with Bryce Lease, director Agnieszka Błońska explores her evolving feminist and queer aesthetics through her six productions at Teatr Powszechny in Warsaw, culminating in Orlando. Biografie (2022). Błońska reflects on how collaborations with activists, NGOs, and community participants have transformed both her methodology and the politics of her work. Beginning with Rape. Voices (2015), created with the feminist organisation STER and survivors of sexual violence, she develops a practice grounded in co-authorship, research-based dramaturgy, and intergenerational perspectives on the inheritance of violence. Her subsequent projects address gentrification, censorship under the Law and Justice government, Brexit-era xenophobia, and the Catholic Church’s control of women’s bodies, while testing the limits of institutional theatre and the law. The interview shows how Devils and Orlando. Biografie mark a shift toward explicitly queer dramaturgies, experiments with failure and non-linearity, and the integration of professional actors with trans, non-binary, drag, and ‘non-trained’ performers.
