Abstract / Summary

What are the human needs and possession of today and how can we challenge them to be sustainable, coexist with nature with the principles of Asteya (nonstealing), Aparigraha (nonpossession) and Swadeshi (Use Locally Made Goods)

This workshop represents creating a Utopian Sustainable Design ethos, envisaging alternative life styles in harmony with biodiversity, locality, circular cycle and looking for the truth path and the Gandhi principle as a guideline.

Design and creation have always been strongly linked to map out an engaging future and to project utopia. However, It has lost its soul by valuing our capitalistic world, and being at the service of consumerism.
The western way, the pollution created by modern society has its consequence. How can the power of design in terms of synthesizing, resolving problems, looking at system thinking and creativity, address this challenge.
The Geodome, based on the Buckminster Fuller principle, and his idea of “ephemeralisation”, has been executed under the direction of using only totally sustainable methods. It stands as a conceptual template, a metaphor to build
from through each of the students using different yet collaborative disciplines to express their individual ideas of the concept of Utopia.

The design process will aim to create micro living experiments where we will explore needs and thematic in terms of tomorrow needs, local and regenerative way of making objects, material, food... alongside photographic
and video narrative to reflect and communicate the students immediate scenario.

The final outcome aims to create an experimental digital and physical installation projecting future living sustainable scenario merging ethos and utopian concepts, local resources, cutting edge technologies alongside material research cycle, visualisation and time-lapse projection.

This has been showcased at NID, Paldi, Ahmedabad 2019 as a result of the International open elective 2019 : “GANDHI & DESIGN” which was open to the general public and mention in the press : Times of India.
