Abstract / Summary

The Live Audience Accessibility & Augmentation 2 Festivals ('LAAA2F') Project carried out field tests of haptic vests during performances by Deaf Rave DJ's and MC's which took place at Boomtown Fair in August 2023 and the Deaf Rave Festival in October 2023. The project builds on the previous success of the initial LAAA project which brough Deaf Rave DJ workshops featuring haptic jackets to AMATA at Falmouth University in May 2023.

Methodology - Following an analysis of existing literature and drawing upon previous research, primary research was carried out to collect and interpret empirical evidence for quantitative analysis. A quantitative survey was used to provide breath of information from a range of respondents (Muijs 2011).

Closed questions related to age, gender, hearing level, disability, neurodivergence, and experience of engaging with haptic vests and/or haptic flooring. Respondents were asked to self-identify as attending live music events as a paying audience member, as part of their job or not attending live music performances.

Additional closed questions elucidated quantitative information through two five-point Likert scales to address the thesis that: haptic ICT may increase perceptions of access, artistic appreciation, communitas, inclusion or liveness at music performances from individual attendees. The first Likert scale asked respondents to indicate the extent to which they agree with a range of statements regarding their experience of a live music performance augmented with interactive haptic technology. The second utilised a revised version of a previously devised scale of liveness in performances at, or emanating from, music festivals (Bossey, A. 2023) to ascertain their perception of liveness from selected experiences.
