Made in Redruth

In what ways does local, positive storytelling in community newspapers counteract feelings of disempowerment and social exclusion.

Aims:
I have created and published two free print newspapers for the people of Redruth in Cornwall that features positive and community based stories about the town. The newspaper, titled Made in Redruth, was printed in June 2024 and June 2025 and distributed in shops and community spaces.
The newspaper was a collaborative project with Falmouth University, The Ladder and the Redruth community.

Research Methods:
I used qualitative methods in terms of interviews and case studies to determine what people felt about the town before we published. We used social media to garner responses of what people wanted to see in the paper.

Process and Development:
Project management was essential. I led the collaborations with The Ladder and worked with staff and students at Falmouth University and managed the work flow. Having tight commissions, with a set deadline reflects industry practice and was met by all students.

Outputs and Contribution:
The newspaper advances knowledge by collaboratively working with an external partner to paint a positive image of the town to combat the feeling of disempowerment and social exclusion felt by many residents.
This year, I have initiated another research project to produce a free community newspaper for Bodmin.

Impact and Significance:
I will be conducting an impact study in June to determine reaction to the newspapers and whether people see them as a positive voice for Redruth. I will be presenting my findings at an Association of Journalism Educators conference on June 25th.

Researcher’s Role:
I led meetings between the client and the university, dealt with any issues, managed the budget and commissioned writers. I also wrote articles, subbed all the written work, worked with a designer and ensured each stage of the production process reflected industry practice.
