Abstract / Summary
This chapter presents a contextual account of the practical, affective, and eco-philosophical considerations associated with the creation of a fixed media soundscape for a fulldome immersive audiovisual experience centered on the ancient Atlantic temperate rainforest of Cabilla in Cornwall. Drawing on Braidotti’s affirmative ethics and Ferrett’s dark sound ecology, the project emphasises ethical engagement with the environment and the production of deeper connection between audiences and the natural world. Through affective listening, field recording, soundscape composition, and the integration of spatial audio, the work transforms participants from passive observers into active agents, challenging traditional anthropocentric perspectives. The project highlights the vital role of responsible media production in engaging analytical faculties, encouraging reflection on ecological crises, and countering the commodification of immersive experiences. The chapter promotes the potential of shared immersive media to produce a common worldview, an increasingly urgent need in a fragmented media landscape dominated by hyper-targeted, isolated informational worlds. Ultimately, the project calls for affirmative shared immersive experiences that cultivate deeper environmental awareness and responsibility.
