Case studies from the Live Briefs on BA(Hons) Animation at Falmouth University
CILECT

30-minute presentation by Katharine Nicholls and Derek Hayes from BA Animation and VFX at Falmouth University

Abstract
We present case studies from BA Animation and VFX at Falmouth University to demonstrate and evaluate our work on ‘live briefs’, in which second year students work with external clients on animation projects that will have impact in the real world.
Case studies will include our work on a new resource for Cornish schools based on the remarkable testimony of Holocaust survivor Blanka Engleberg. Films made with Devon and Cornwall Police aimed at helping to reduce hate crime in the area will also be discussed, alongside animation that communicates with sensitivity and humour the principles of Restorative Justice. We will also present the work of students on funded archive research projects, such as ‘Voices from Greenham Common’, that captured stories from the peace-seeking movement of the Greenham Common women who protested against nuclear weapons in the 1980’s and whose actions still influence the shape of protests and feminist campaigns today.
Through these and further meaningful case-studies, we aim to show how the role of lecturer as facilitator, supporter and mediator in the relationship with the client, allows students to venture outside, to collaborate and communicate within the professional world.
